The Monkey House is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most unique, cherished, and intimate live performance sanctuaries. Tucked away in a private residence in North Berkeley, it is a dedicated listening room designed from the ground up for artists and audiences who crave a genuine connection without the chatter, clinking beer glasses, or distractions of a typical nightclub.
The Origins & Spirit
Founded by singer-songwriter, playwright, and theater maker Ira Marlowe, The Monkey House was born out of a desire to revive the classic salon and parlor concert tradition. Drawing inspiration from vintage Vaudeville theaters of the early 20th century, the space boasts warm red velvet drapery, antique accents, and unusually warm acoustics that allow acoustic guitars and voices to resonate with stunning clarity.
Over the years, our cozy 50-seat room has hosted Grammy-winning troubadours, legendary folk singers, stand-up comedians, puppeteers, poets, and original musical theatricals. Every show feels like a gathering of old friends in a grand, Bohemian living room.
Why It’s Special
Because we are a private arts residence rather than a commercial establishment, we operate differently than standard venues:

- Uncompromising Acoustics: Tuned carefully so that performers can play acoustic without sterile over-amplification.
- BYOB Policy: We don’t sell drinks, but you are welcome to bring your favorite beverage.
